Try this first
Force restart: press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears (iPhone 8 and newer)
Call the phone from another phone. If it rings or vibrates, the phone is working and the fault is the screen
Plug it into a computer it has connected to before and back it up in Finder or iTunes if it shows up
If Siri is turned on, ask it to turn the brightness up, in case the screen is only dark
Don't press on the lines or patches: pressure makes display damage spread
If it started after a drop or liquid, bring it in rather than restarting it over and over
