   Battery health diagnostic

   We read the health data, check charge cycles where the phone reports them, and look at how the phone behaves under load. We also check the charging port so a bad port isn't mistaken for a bad battery.

   Open the phone safely

   iPhones open from the screen side; most Samsung and Pixel phones open from the back. The battery connector is disconnected before any other cable is touched.

   Remove the old cell

   Batteries are held in with stretch-release adhesive strips or strong glue. We use the pull tabs when they cooperate and isopropyl and plastic cards when they don't, never metal tools that can puncture a cell.

   Install the new battery

   The new cell gets fresh adhesive so it can't shift, and the screen or back is resealed with new adhesive.

   Test and calibrate

   We confirm the phone charges, reports the new battery, and runs without shutting off. We tell you how the health readout will appear on your model.

The battery itself works the same either way. What changes from brand to brand is how the phone reports a battery that wasn't installed through the manufacturer's own system.

Battery replacement takes about 45 minutes on most phones, and you can wait at the shop. A swollen battery takes extra care to remove, and if the screen or back was damaged by swelling we may need to replace that too. We tell you before we start.

• Back up your phone; it usually comes back with data intact, but a backup is cheap insurance.
• If the battery is swelling, stop charging it and don't press the screen or back down.
• Know your passcode so we can confirm the phone reads the new battery.
• Write down your battery health percentage if your phone shows it.
• Bring your charger if you suspect it, so we can test it too.

If the rest of the phone is in good shape, a battery is the best-value repair you can do. It turns a phone that dies at lunch into one that lasts all day again, for far less than a new phone. It stops making sense when the phone no longer gets software updates, or when the battery, screen and port all need work at once. We can price both sides, and you can trade the old phone in if you go new.

Battery kits are cheap, and this is a repair a patient person can do. The dangers are real, though. Puncturing or bending a lithium-ion cell can start a fire within seconds, and on iPhones the screen has to come off first, which risks the display and Face ID cables. If the adhesive tabs snap and you find yourself prying at the cell with a screwdriver, stop right there. A swollen battery should never be a DIY job.
