   Rule out the cable and charger

   We plug in our own known-good cable and power adapter first. A surprising number of 'bad ports' turn out to be a frayed cable or a weak wall brick.

   Inspect under magnification

   We look into the port with a microscope for lint, corrosion, bent pins or a cracked USB-C tongue. You can look too, it helps to see what we see.

   Clean when cleaning will do

   Packed debris comes out with non-conductive picks and isopropyl alcohol, never metal tools that can short the pins. If the port grips and charges normally after cleaning, that is where we stop.

   Replace the port assembly

   On iPhones the port lives on a flex cable that also carries the bottom microphone and antenna connections, so the phone is opened from the screen side and the whole flex is swapped. Many Android phones put the port on a small daughterboard that is replaced as one piece.

   Board-level work if needed

   Some phones have the port soldered directly to the main board, and some faults trace back to a charging chip. Our techs handle that micro-soldering in-house on the bench in Charlotte.

   Test charge, data and mic

   We confirm charging current with a USB meter, check fast charging, connect to a computer, and make a test call so the bottom mic is verified before you leave.

Charging port problems have three possible fixes, and the cheapest one that actually works is the one we recommend. You approve the plan before we start.

Most charging port repairs are done the same day, and many are finished while you wait. Cleaning is the quickest outcome. A full port or flex replacement takes longer because the phone has to be opened, and a board-level fault or a part we need to order can push it past the same day. We tell you before you approve anything.

• Bring the cable and charger you normally use so we can test them too.
• Back up the phone to iCloud, Google or a computer if it will still charge long enough.
• Do not dig in the port with a pin, paperclip or toothpick before you come in.
• Note when it started and whether the phone got wet, since that changes what we look for.
• Know your passcode so we can confirm charging and data after the repair.

A charging port is almost always worth fixing. It is a small part compared to the value of the phone, and ignoring it usually ends with a phone that won't power on at all. The exceptions are a phone that also has a failing battery, a cracked screen and an old processor, where the combined repairs approach the cost of a newer used phone. In that case we will lay out both numbers and let you choose.

A careful clean is a fair thing to try at home. Power the phone off, shine a flashlight in, and use a wooden toothpick to lift lint from the back wall, not the pins. Never use metal, liquid or compressed air blown straight in. If it still won't grip after that, stop. Replacing an iPhone port means removing the screen and battery first, and many Android ports sit under glued back glass. That is where DIY attempts turn into a cracked screen or a torn flex.

• Plug and unplug straight in and out, not at an angle.
