Signs you need this repair
No chime, no backlight, no response to the charger. Often a board-level power fault, a USB-C port controller or a dead battery.
A boot loop can be software, a failing SSD, or a hardware fault the Mac hits during startup.
The Mac can't find a usable startup disk. The drive may be fine and macOS damaged, or the reverse.
On USB-C MacBooks each port has its own controller. One failed port controller can stop charging on that side.
The battery is swelling. Stop charging it and get it replaced.
Display, backlight or the display flex cable. Common on 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros.
The 2016 to 2019 butterfly keyboards are known for this. Repair usually means replacing the top case.
What usually causes it
The most common cause of a dead Mac logic board. Corrosion can show up days after a spill.
A shorted capacitor or failed power IC can kill the main rail and make the whole Mac look dead.

Repair, board swap or new Mac?
If you've been told your Mac needs a new logic board, get a second opinion first. Many 'dead board' Macs have one failed component, and fixing it costs far less than a replacement board and keeps your data. Repair is the clear choice for Apple Silicon Macs and recent Intel models. On an older Intel Mac that can't run the macOS version you need, put repair money toward a new one. We'll tell you which side yours falls on.
Thinking of fixing it yourself?
On a Mac, safe DIY is mostly software: an SMC reset on Intel Macs, booting into Recovery, running Disk Utility First Aid, or a DFU restore with Apple Configurator if you know what you're doing. Hardware is harder. Batteries are glued, screws are tiny and varied, and on many models the trackpad cable runs right where you'd pry. Never power on a Mac after a spill to see if it still works. If it won't boot after a software fix, stop and bring it in before trying anything that erases the drive.
After your repair
- Use a quality USB-C charger and cable. Cheap ones are a common cause of port controller failure.
- Keep drinks away from the keyboard. On a MacBook, liquid goes straight to the board.
- Turn on Time Machine or another automatic backup.
- Check battery health in System Settings and replace it when it shows Service Recommended.
Questions people ask
My Mac won't turn on at all. Is it worth diagnosing?
Yes. The diagnostic is free, and most dead Macs have one specific fault on the board, port or battery. You'll know the cost before deciding.
Apple said my Mac needs a new logic board. Do I have options?
Usually. A board replacement swaps everything when often one component failed. We repair the board itself where possible, which also keeps your data.
Can you upgrade my macOS so my apps stop complaining?
If your Mac supports a newer version, yes. If Apple has dropped your model, the official path ends there. We can explain the options and their tradeoffs.
My trackpad is lifting or the case is bulging. What is that?
A swollen battery. Stop charging it and don't press on it. Bring it in for a battery replacement.
