   Open and disconnect the battery

   The display is held by pentalobe screws and adhesive. We warm the edge, lift it with a suction tool and thin picks, and disconnect the battery before touching any display cable.

   Protect Face ID

   Face ID lives in the TrueDepth module at the top, not in the screen itself, but on several models the earpiece flex that sits beside it has to be transferred. Our techs handle that part slowly, because damaging it is the one way a screen job can break Face ID.

   Fit the new panel and seal it

   We move over any brackets, clean the frame of old adhesive and lay in a fresh seal so the screen sits flush. A raised edge is a sign of a rushed job.

   True Tone and calibration

   True Tone relies on calibration data stored on the original display. When the old screen's chip is still readable, that data can be copied to the new panel so True Tone keeps working.

   Test with you before payment

   We check Face ID, True Tone, touch across the whole panel, brightness, the earpiece and the front camera with you at the counter. You pay after you've seen it working.

• Back up to iCloud or a computer if the screen still works enough to do it.
• Know your passcode so we can test Face ID and touch after the repair.
• If ghost touch is entering passcodes on its own, turn the phone off on the way in.
• Take off the case and any cracked screen protector, or let us do it.
• Mention any earlier screen repairs so we know what we are opening.

A cracked screen on any iPhone from the 11 onward is almost always worth repairing; the phone still gets current iOS updates and a new screen makes it feel new again. On an iPhone X or XS, compare the screen price with the phone's value, especially if the battery is also worn. If the frame is badly bent or the board is damaged too, replacing the phone may make more sense, and you can trade the old one in.

iPhone screen kits are sold everywhere, and some people do this successfully. The real risks are tearing the Face ID flex, cracking the new panel while seating it, losing True Tone, and shorting the board by prying with the battery still connected. If you have already opened the phone and something isn't working, stop and bring the parts in. We regularly finish jobs people started at home, and it costs less to stop early than after a torn flex cable.

• Put on a tempered glass protector and a case with a raised lip, today.
• Avoid submerging the phone; a new seal helps but factory water resistance can't be promised after any opening.
• If you see a 'genuine display' notice in Settings, that is iOS reporting the part, not a fault.
• Keep your receipt for Covered Screen. Crack it within 12 months and bring it back.
