Board-level repair

Quick answer

PS5 repair means fixing the console at board level instead of replacing it — a failed HDMI port gets a new port micro-soldered on, an overheating APU gets fresh liquid metal and a deep clean, and a torn fan connector gets its pads rebuilt under a microscope. Most repairs are done same day after a free diagnostic, your games and saves are untouched, and every job carries a 90-day workmanship warranty.

Most common PS5 repair

PS5 HDMI Port Replacement

Black screen on a PS5 that powers on? That's almost always the HDMI port. We do this repair at board level — full micro-soldering, not a swap from a donor board. See the dedicated page for the complete treatment, DIY rescue, and what to expect.

PS5 HDMI Port Repair

PS5 Repairs We Do

HDMI Black Screen

PS5 powers on, beeps correctly, but the TV shows nothing. Almost always the HDMI port — the socket's pins collapse or delaminate from the board under repeated plug-cycling. We replace it at board level. See our dedicated PS5 HDMI port repair page for the full treatment.

PS5 HDMI Port Repair

Overheating & Loud Fan

PS5 fan ramps to full speed and the console shuts down or throttles. Dust accumulation and degraded liquid metal on the APU are the cause. We do a full teardown, clean the cooling system, and service the liquid metal interface — not just a repaste.

Won't Power On

No response at all when the power button is pressed, or three beeps then shutdown. Power supply faults, blown fuses, and board-level power delivery issues — all diagnosable and repairable at our bench.

Disc Drive Issues

PS5 disc edition won't read games or won't eject. The PS5's disc drive is board-paired — it requires an authorisation handshake with the console's SoC. We handle paired drive replacements and drive mechanism repairs.

Liquid Metal Service

Sony used liquid metal thermal interface material on the PS5's APU. Liquid metal migrates over time, can cause shorts, and dries out — requiring full removal, cleaning, and reapplication. This is a precision procedure; we do it correctly.

Torn Fan Connector

The most common DIY-repair casualty on PS5: the fan ribbon connector pads tear off the motherboard when the connector is pulled at the wrong angle. We rebuild the pads and traces under the microscope and fit a new connector. Not a disposal job.

Burnt capacitors and scorching on a PS5 motherboard damaged by a power surge
A PS5 hit by a power surge during a lightning storm. The capacitors and power chip burned out — hours of component-level work later, it powered back on with everything on the drive intact.

PS5 Cleaning & Thermal Service in Charlotte

A loud PS5 fan or a console that shuts down mid-game is almost always a cleaning job, not a component failure. The PS5 draws air through a large impeller and exhausts it through a dense heatsink — after a year or two of regular use, that fin stack fills with dust and the fan has to spin harder to push air through it. Combine that with Sony's liquid metal thermal interface on the APU, which migrates and degrades over time, and temperatures climb fast.

Our PS5 thermal service is a full teardown: we remove the heatsink, extract the dust with compressed air and brushes, clean the liquid metal residue off the APU and heatsink contact surfaces, and apply fresh liquid metal correctly — a procedure that requires care because gallium-based material conducts electricity and must stay off surrounding components. We reassemble, run the console under sustained load, and confirm stable temperatures before it leaves. Most thermal services are completed the same day. The overheating service is $99.99.

If your PS5 fan is loud but the console isn't yet shutting down, that's the right time to bring it in — before the heat damages the APU or causes a liquid metal short. Don't wait for a full breakdown.

PS5 Controller Repair — Stick Drift, Buttons, Charging

DualSense controller faults are handled at the same bench as the console repairs. Stick drift — where the analogue stick registers movement with no input — is the most common controller fault we see, caused by worn-out potentiometers inside the stick module. We replace the modules rather than treating the symptom. Unresponsive or sticky buttons, broken shell tabs, and worn charging ports are all repairable. A charging port replacement on a DualSense is a micro-soldering job; we do it correctly rather than pushing a loose module that fails again in a month.

We also do full shell replacements if you want to change the colour or replace a cracked housing. Bring the controller in with the console or on its own. See our dedicated controller drift repair page for full detail on the repair process and pricing.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Free diagnostic

We open the PS5 and use bench tools and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact fault before quoting any repair.

  2. 2

    Board-level repair

HDMI micro-soldering, liquid metal service, power component replacement, fan connector rebuild, or disc drive pairing — whatever the fault requires, done at the component level.

  3. 3

    Thermal and load testing

We run the PS5 under a sustained heavy load to verify stable temperatures, clean video output, and reliable operation before it leaves our bench.

  4. 4

    90-day warranty

Every PS5 repair is backed by our 90-day workmanship warranty. If the same fault returns, we make it right.

DIY repair went sideways?

We Fix the Ones Other Shops Won't Touch

The most common way PS5s arrive at our bench in worse shape than they started: a DIY deep-clean or HDMI repair, and a fan connector that tore off the motherboard on the way out. It's an easy mistake — the PS5's fan ribbon connector is fragile, and one confident pull lifts the pads right off the board. Most shops call that fatal. It isn't. We rebuild the connector pads and traces under the microscope and fit a new connector as part of finishing the repair. Bring it in as-is.

PS5 Repair FAQs

My PS5 powers on but the screen is black — can you fix it?

Yes. A PS5 that powers on with no picture almost always has a failed HDMI port. We micro-solder a replacement port at board level. See our dedicated PS5 HDMI port repair page for the full detail.

My PS5 fan is very loud and the console keeps overheating — can you fix it?

Yes. PS5 overheating is caused by dust accumulation in the cooling fins and degraded or migrated liquid metal on the APU. We perform a full teardown, deep-clean the cooling system, and service the liquid metal interface. Temperatures drop substantially and the fan noise returns to normal.

What is liquid metal and why does the PS5 need it serviced?

Sony used gallium-based liquid metal thermal interface material on the PS5's APU instead of conventional thermal paste, for better heat transfer. Over time liquid metal migrates, can make contact with board traces causing shorts, and degrades. Servicing it — removing the old material, cleaning carefully, and applying fresh liquid metal — is a precision procedure that we perform correctly.

My PS5 disc drive won't read games — is it fixable?

Yes, but the PS5's disc drive is board-paired to the console's SoC with an authentication handshake. A replacement drive must be paired via Sony's service tool or sourced as a matched pair. We handle paired drive replacements and can repair drive mechanism faults.

I tried to fix my PS5 myself and tore the fan connector off the board — is it ruined?

No. A torn fan connector is repairable. We rebuild the torn pads and traces under the microscope and fit a new connector. This is one of the most common DIY casualties we see — bring it in as-is with any loose parts and we'll finish what you started.

Do you repair the PS5 Slim and PS5 Digital Edition?

Yes. We service the original PS5 (Disc and Digital editions), the PS5 Slim (Disc and Digital), and the PS5 Pro for all major fault types.

Cracked my iPhone Pro Max screen the night before a trip. Walked in, walked out 35 minutes later with a screen that looks brand new. True Tone and Face ID work perfectly. These folks are the real deal.

My MacBook wouldn't turn on and Apple wanted to replace the whole logic board for over a thousand dollars. Charlotte Tech Repair fixed the actual faulty component for a fraction of that. Saved all my data too.

Priya S.

Ballantyne, Charlotte

PS5 stopped showing any picture. They micro-soldered a new HDMI port and it has been flawless for months. Super honest about pricing and timeline. Highly recommend.
