What usually causes it
A hard drive has to physically move a head to find data. An SSD doesn't, which is why random reads are so much faster.
Browsers, Windows and Office need more RAM than they did when many computers were sold.
SSDs slow down when they're almost full, and small ones fill up fast.
How we fix it
- 1Check what fits
We identify the drive interface (2.5 inch SATA, M.2 SATA or M.2 NVMe), M.2 slot length and keying, and the RAM type, speed and number of slots. We also check whether memory is soldered.
- 2Health check the old drive
We read its SMART data first. A failing drive gets imaged carefully instead of cloned the normal way.
- 3Clone your system
Your Windows or macOS install, programs, files and settings are copied to the new SSD and the partitions are expanded to use the extra space.
- 4Install and configure
We fit the SSD and memory, confirm the BIOS sees everything at the right speed, and make sure the computer boots from the new drive.
- 5Test and hand back
We test boot time, memory stability and drive health, and confirm your files and programs open. You get your old drive back.

Upgrade or replace?
If your computer runs a reasonably recent processor and its only problem is speed, an SSD and RAM upgrade is the cheapest way to fix it. It works especially well on desktops and laptops that came with hard drives. If your processor can't run current Windows, or the laptop has soldered memory and a soldered SSD, an upgrade isn't possible or isn't enough. We'll tell you that at the assessment.
Thinking of fixing it yourself?
On many desktops and some laptops, an SSD swap is a reasonable DIY job. The tricky parts are buying the right M.2 type and length, cloning without missing hidden recovery or boot partitions, and getting the BIOS to boot from the new drive. RAM is simpler but must match your DDR type and speed exactly. If your computer won't boot after the swap, put the old drive back and bring both in.
After your repair
- Keep some free space on the SSD so it stays fast.
- Don't run defrag on an SSD. Windows handles SSD maintenance automatically.
- Keep the old drive as a backup until you've confirmed everything is there.
- Set up an automatic backup to an external drive or the cloud.
