Clicking, grinding, or ticking sounds
A clicking hard drive is a medical emergency for your data. The click-of-death sound is the read/write head repeatedly failing to find the track and resetting — a symptom of head crash, platter damage, or failed head assembly. Power the drive off immediately. Every read attempt on a clicking drive risks further platter damage. Bring it in as-is for a free assessment — do not keep trying to access it.
Drive not detected by the computer
A drive that spins up (you can feel or hear it) but does not appear in Windows, macOS, or BIOS typically has a PCB failure, firmware corruption, or a failed read/write head. A completely dead drive — no spin, no sound — usually has a PCB failure or a seized motor spindle. We test the PCB, swap donor components where applicable, and advise on recovery paths.
SSD not detected or failing
SSDs fail differently from HDDs — rather than clicking, a failing NAND SSD typically becomes unresponsive, enters read-only mode, or disappears from the device list entirely. The controller firmware is often the culprit. We diagnose SSD failures including M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Some SSD failures are recoverable in-shop; complex NAND-level failures hand off to our full data recovery service.
Bad sectors and read errors
Windows BSOD with CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED or SMART errors reporting reallocated sectors, pending sectors, or uncorrectable errors are symptoms of a drive accumulating bad sectors. Some bad sectors are remapped by the drive's firmware and are not an immediate crisis — but growing bad sector counts are a reliable sign of impending failure. We test with CrystalDiskInfo/Smartmontools and advise on whether the drive is safe to continue using.
Drive making noise but not failing SMART
Not all drive noise is catastrophic. Operational sounds — read/write head seek noise, spin-up vibration — are normal. Abnormal sounds include repeated clicking (head reset), a single heavy clunk at startup (head stack crash), or high-pitched whining (bearing issue). We listen, run a SMART test, and test surface health to separate normal drive noise from the noise that means you need to act now.
External hard drive not recognised
External drives that stop being recognised by a computer usually have a failed USB-to-SATA bridge board — the small PCB inside the enclosure — rather than a failed drive. We test the drive outside the enclosure first. In most cases the drive itself is fine and we can extract your data without any complex recovery. The bridge board is replaced or we migrate you to a new enclosure.

Data is the priority, not the drive
A hard drive is replaceable. Your data — especially photos, financial records, and work files without a backup — is not. Our triage is oriented around data safety first. If your drive is clicking, we will tell you to stop using it before we quote you anything, because every additional power-on reduces your recovery odds.
