The short answer

We look at what's actually slowing you down, recommend the one or two upgrades that will make a real difference, install them and test the result. Storage, memory, graphics, power supply, cooling and processor upgrades are usually same or next day. The exact price for your upgrade is shown on this page, the assessment is free, and our work has a 90-day warranty.

Signs you need this repair

Everything feels slow, even simple things

Long boots, apps that take ages to open and a disk running at 100% in Task Manager usually mean a spinning hard drive is the bottleneck.

Slows down with a few tabs open

When memory fills up the computer starts using the drive as overflow. More RAM fixes this directly.

Games stutter or run at low settings

The graphics card is the usual limit, though an older processor or single stick of RAM can hold a good card back.

Running out of storage

Constant 'low disk space' warnings and nowhere to put photos or projects. A larger or second drive solves it without deleting anything.

Hot, loud and throttling

Dried thermal paste and clogged coolers make the processor slow itself down to stay safe. A cooling service or better cooler gets the speed back.

New software says your PC isn't supported

Some upgrades help, others won't. Windows 11, for example, has processor and TPM requirements that RAM and storage can't change.

What usually causes it

Spinning hard drive

Mechanical drives were fine years ago but are now the single biggest reason older computers feel slow.

Not enough memory

Modern browsers and apps use far more RAM than they did a few years ago. A machine that shipped with a small amount struggles now.

Thermal throttling

Dust and old paste raise temperatures until the processor slows itself. It looks like a slow computer but it's a cooling problem.

Unbalanced parts

A powerful card on a weak power supply, or a fast processor with single-channel memory, leaves performance on the table.

How we fix it

  1. 1
    Free performance assessment

We check drive health, memory use, temperatures and what the board supports. We ask what you use it for, because a photo editor and a gamer need different upgrades.

  2. 2
    Pick parts that fit

We confirm the memory type and speed the board takes, the drive slots available, power supply wattage and connectors, and physical clearance for a graphics card or cooler.

  3. 3
    Protect your data

If storage is changing we clone your system to the new drive so your files, programs and settings come across. You get the old drive back.

  4. 4
    Install and update firmware

We install the parts, update the BIOS where a new processor or memory needs it, enable the memory's rated speed profile, and install current drivers.

  5. 5
    Benchmark and stress test

We compare before and after where it's meaningful, and run the machine under load to confirm temperatures and stability.

Upgrade options and what each one does

Not every computer can take every upgrade. Many thin laptops have memory soldered to the board, and Apple Silicon Macs can't be upgraded at all after purchase. We'll tell you what's possible on yours.

SSD

The biggest change for any computer still on a hard drive. Boots and app launches get dramatically faster.

RAM

Helps if you multitask, keep many tabs open or work with large files. Matched pairs run in dual channel for better speed.

Graphics card

For gaming, 3D and video work on desktops. Often needs a power supply check, and sometimes a new one.

Processor

Possible when your motherboard socket and chipset support a faster chip. Sometimes a board and memory change is the honest answer.

Power supply

Needed for a bigger graphics card or when the current unit is old, noisy or underpowered.

Cooling

Fresh thermal paste, new fans or a better cooler to stop throttling and noise.

How long it takes

Most upgrades are same or next day. A straight RAM or SSD install is quick. Things that add time are cloning a large or failing drive, BIOS updates before a processor swap, and parts we need to order for your exact board or laptop. We'll tell you the timeline when you approve the parts.

Before you bring it in

  • Tell us what you use the computer for and what feels slow. That decides the upgrade more than any spec sheet.
  • Back up anything important, even though we clone your drive.
  • Know your login password so we can test everything after the install.
  • If you've already bought parts, bring them with the receipt and box.
  • Note any software licenses that are tied to hardware, like some audio or CAD programs.

Upgrade or buy new?

Upgrading is worth it when the processor is still decent and the bottleneck is storage, memory, cooling or graphics. A desktop from the last several years with an SSD and more RAM can feel new again for a fraction of the cost of a replacement. It's not worth it when the processor is too old for the software you need, when the board can't take more memory, or when Windows 11 support is a must and your chip isn't on the list. In those cases we'll tell you plainly, and we can move your files to the new machine.

Thinking of fixing it yourself?

RAM and SSD installs on desktops are reasonable DIY jobs if you ground yourself, check the exact memory type and keep the old drive until the new one works. Laptops are harder: some hide the memory under the keyboard, many have it soldered, and M.2 slots come in different lengths and keying. Graphics card and processor swaps carry more risk, from bent socket pins to an undersized power supply. If the computer won't boot after your upgrade, stop and bring it in with the old part.

After your repair

  • Leave at least a fifth of your new SSD empty. It stays faster and lasts longer.
  • Keep graphics and chipset drivers current, especially after a GPU change.
  • Clean dust filters every few months so the new cooling keeps working.
  • Keep the old drive until you've confirmed everything you need is on the new one.

Questions people ask

Which upgrade gives the biggest speed boost on an older PC?

Moving from a hard drive to an SSD, almost every time. If you already have an SSD, more RAM is next. We check which one is your real bottleneck before recommending anything.

Can you add a graphics card to my desktop for gaming?

Usually. We check the power supply wattage and connectors, physical clearance in the case and whether the processor will keep up. Office desktops with small proprietary power supplies sometimes need a new supply too.

Can older laptops be upgraded?

Many can take an SSD and some can take more RAM. Lots of thin laptops have memory soldered to the board, and Apple Silicon MacBooks can't be upgraded at all. We'll check your exact model.

Is it cheaper to upgrade or buy a new PC?

If the processor is still capable, upgrading is almost always cheaper. If the platform is too old for current software, a new machine is the better buy, and we'll tell you so.

How much do computer upgrades cost?

See the starting price on this page. You'll get a quote for parts and labor before we start, and the assessment is free.

Will I lose my files or programs?

No reinstall is needed for most upgrades. When we change the drive we clone your system across so programs and settings stay. We'll tell you before we start if anything could be at risk.

Will an upgrade make my computer Windows 11 compatible?

Only sometimes. Windows 11 needs a supported processor and TPM 2.0 with Secure Boot. Turning on TPM in the BIOS can fix it on some machines, but if the processor isn't supported, RAM and storage won't change that.

Can you upgrade a Mac?

Older Intel Macs often can take more storage or memory, depending on the model. Apple Silicon Macs have memory and storage built into the chip package or soldered to the board, so they can't.

How long does an upgrade take?

Usually same or next day. Big clones and ordered parts add time.
