Signs you need this repair
Blue light of death
The light pulses blue and never turns white, or the PS4 shuts off a few seconds after starting. That's a hardware fault, and the cause varies.
No picture
The PS4 beeps and the light goes white, but the TV shows nothing. Usually the HDMI port or the HDMI encoder chip.
Jet-engine fan
Loud fans are a PS4 trademark, especially on the Pro. Past a point, it means dust and dried paste.
Disc problems
Discs won't read, won't eject, or the original PS4 ejects on its own with a beep.
Won't power on
No light, no beep. Often the internal power supply, sometimes a fault on the board.
Freezes, crashes or slow loading
Random freezes, error codes or painfully slow loads often trace to an aging hard drive or heat.
What usually causes it
Heat over years of use
The PS4 runs warm, and after years of dust and drying paste, heat starts to stress the board and the processor's solder connections.
Failing hard drive
The PS4 uses a 2.5-inch laptop-style drive. When it starts to fail you see freezes, slow loads, database errors and sometimes the blue light.
HDMI damage
A pulled cable damages the port. Surges and heat can kill the HDMI encoder chip behind it.
Power supply failure
All three PS4 models have an internal power supply that can fail with age or after a surge.
Worn disc drive
Lasers weaken and loading gears strip, especially on consoles that saw a lot of physical games.
How we fix it

We test power, thermals, video output and the disc drive, and check the hard drive's health. Then you get a quote before any work starts.
- 2Identify the model
The model number (CUH-1000 through CUH-7200) tells us which board, power supply and drive the console uses. The three PS4 generations differ more inside than they look.
- 3Board-level repair
HDMI ports are micro-soldered, failed components are replaced on the board, and power supplies are swapped when they're the problem. We fix the specific fault instead of swapping parts and hoping.
- 4Thermal service when needed
Since most PS4s we open are dusty, we'll recommend a clean and repaste if the temperatures call for it. You decide.
- 5Storage work
If the hard drive is failing, we fit a new drive or an SSD and install the system software so the PS4 boots fresh.

- Back up saves to PS Plus cloud storage or a USB drive if the PS4 still works.
- Note the model number from the label on the back or bottom (CUH-xxxx).
- Bring the power cord. Leave the controllers home unless they need work.
- Pop out any game disc if the drive still opens.
- Tell us about anything you've tried, including a system reset or a hard drive swap.
Repair or replace?
The PS4 is old enough now that this is a real question, so here's the honest answer. HDMI ports, power supplies, cleaning, hard drives and disc drives are usually worth fixing, especially if you have a library of discs or the console is shared by kids. A PS4 with a failed main processor, or several big faults at once, is usually better retired, and we'll tell you so. The free diagnostic gives you the number before you commit.
Thinking of fixing it yourself?
PS4 owners can safely do a few things. Swapping the hard drive is designed to be user-serviceable, as long as you download the full system software file and install it through Safe Mode. Cleaning the outside vents with a soft brush is fine. Opening the case is where it gets tricky. Some screws sit under warranty stickers, the ribbon cables tear easily, and the original PS4's power supply holds charge after unplugging. Board work like HDMI ports needs hot air and magnification. If you start and something breaks, stop and bring in all the parts.
After your repair
- Keep the PS4 out of closed cabinets and off carpet.
- Plug it into a surge protector.
- Pull the HDMI plug before you carry the PS4 anywhere.
- Keep saves backed up to the cloud or a USB drive.
- If the same fault comes back within 90 days, bring it in under the warranty.

Can you fix the PS4 blue light of death?
Often, yes. The blue light can come from the power supply, the hard drive, the HDMI encoder or a board fault, so we test each one rather than guessing. You'll know the cause and the price before we start.
My PS4 has no picture. What's wrong?
Usually a damaged HDMI port, sometimes the HDMI encoder chip behind it. Both are board-level repairs we do in-house.
Why is my PS4 fan so loud?
