Console Repair

PlayStation 1 & 2 Repair in Charlotte, NC

The original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 are two of the best-selling consoles of all time, and both suffer from very well-documented hardware failures after decades of use. The PS1's laser weakens and can no longer read discs reliably. The PS2's laser and disc drive mechanism — especially on the fat PS2 — is infamous for failure and is the most common reason PS2 consoles stop working. Charlotte Tech Repair at 1001 E WT Harris Blvd, University City, Charlotte, specialises in PS1 and PS2 restoration for customers from across the Charlotte metro including Concord, Huntersville, Ballantyne, Matthews, Fort Mill, and Rock Hill. We replace laser assemblies and full disc drives, repair power supply faults, recap aging boards, and restore your console to reliable operation.

How We Repair

Our repair process

  1. 1

    Diagnostic and laser test

We open the console, measure laser output power, test the disc drive spindle and tray mechanism, and assess the board for capacitor condition before quoting any work.

  2. 2

    Laser and disc drive replacement

We replace the laser assembly with a new-spec part calibrated for correct output power, or replace the full disc drive mechanism where needed — the most common fix for PS2 disc read errors.

  3. 3

    Power and board repair

We repair power supply faults, replace failing capacitors causing instability, and address any board-level issues preventing the console from booting.

  4. 4

    Full disc compatibility test

We test with both CD-ROM and DVD-ROM game titles (on PS2) to confirm the laser reads all disc types reliably before returning the console.
