Signs you need this repair
It used to last a school day and now it's empty by lunch. If your use hasn't changed, the cell has probably worn.
The iPad goes black at 20 or 30 percent, then shows more charge once it's plugged back in. A tired battery can't hold its voltage under load, so the iPad cuts power to protect itself.
Unplug it and it dies within minutes, or won't boot without the cable. That can be the battery or a charging fault, so we test before quoting.
A gap between the glass and the frame, or a screen that feels soft when you press near the edge, usually means the battery is swelling underneath. Stop charging it and treat it as a safety issue.
It reads 60 percent, then 15, then 40 after a restart. Erratic readings usually come from a worn cell.
What usually causes it
Every lithium-ion cell loses capacity as it's charged and drained. After a few years of daily use, most iPads hold noticeably less than they did new.
A hot car, a thick case while charging, or charging under a blanket all age the cell faster. Heat is also the most common trigger for swelling.
An iPad stored at zero can drain below the point the battery can recover from. Some come back on a slow charge, some never do.
A worn Lightning or USB-C port, a bad cable, a weak wall adapter or a charging chip on the logic board can all look like a battery problem. Testing sorts these out before you pay for a part you don't need.
How we fix it
- 1Identify the exact iPad
We read the A-number from the back case or from Settings > General > About, because iPads with the same name can use different batteries. We also look for screen lift, a bent frame and earlier repairs.
- 2Test the charge path
With a USB meter on the port we watch how much current the iPad actually draws, then compare that with how the battery behaves. A battery that won't accept charge and a port that won't deliver it look the same on screen but very different on the meter.
- 3Take the screen off safely
On nearly every iPad the battery sits under the display, so the screen has to come off first. We soften the adhesive with controlled heat and work thin plastic picks around the edge, clear of the display cables. Laminated screens on the Air, mini and Pro are the riskiest part, and we tell you so before starting.
- 4Release the old cell
iPad batteries are held down with strong adhesive. We soften it with isopropyl alcohol and lift the cell slowly and flat, never with a metal pry bar, because a bent or punctured lithium cell can vent or catch fire.
- 5Fit the new battery and reseal
The new cell is seated and connected, old adhesive is cleaned off the frame, and fresh adhesive goes down so the screen sits flush.
- 6Test everything the screen touches
After reassembly we check charging, sleep and wake, touch across the whole panel, both cameras, speakers, buttons, Touch ID or Face ID where fitted, and Apple Pencil if your model supports one.
What gets replaced
The repair is a new battery matched to your model's capacity and connector, plus new screen adhesive. Old adhesive is never reused, since it won't hold the glass flat. If testing points somewhere else, we tell you what the real repair is instead.
The worn cell comes out and a new one goes in, with the screen resealed. This is the fix when the battery itself has lost capacity or is swelling.
If your glass is cracked too, doing both in one opening means the iPad is only taken apart once. Ask about adding the battery when you get your screen quote.
When the battery tests fine and the port or charging circuit is the problem, we quote that repair and you don't pay for a battery you don't need.
How long it takes
We give you the completion window with your quote, once we've confirmed the model and the battery is on hand. Laminated screens that need extra care coming off take longer, and so do swollen batteries that have pushed the frame or stretched the old adhesive. If testing points to the port or the board instead, the plan and the timing change, and you approve the new window before we continue.

- Back up to iCloud or a computer before you drop it off.
- Write down your passcode, or be ready to enter it at the counter so we can test the iPad fully.
- Bring the charger and cable you normally use, so we can check them too.

- If the screen is lifting, stop charging, keep it on a hard surface away from anything flammable, and call before you mail it.
Repair or replace?
If your iPad still gets iPadOS updates and runs the apps you use, a battery is usually the sensible fix, because the rest of the tablet is fine and a new iPad costs far more. If it's stuck on an old version that your apps no longer support, or it also has a cracked screen and a failing port, compare the total against a newer model before you spend. The diagnostic costs nothing even if you decide not to repair.

iPad batteries are one of the harder DIY jobs. The screen has to come off first, and laminated displays crack easily when they're pried cold or bent. On older iPads with a home button, the Touch ID cable runs right where a pick goes in, and tearing it ends Touch ID for good. Under the screen, the battery is glued hard to the case, and forcing it with a metal tool can puncture it. If you've started and the glass is cracking, the battery is bending, or a cable has torn, stop, bag every part, and bring it in as it is.
After your repair
- Expect the battery percentage to settle over the first few charge cycles.
- Keep the iPad out of hot cars and don't charge it under pillows or in a thick case.
- Give the new adhesive a day before heavy pressure on the screen edges.
- Use a decent wall adapter. Old 5-watt phone cubes charge an iPad very slowly or not at all.
