Signs you need this repair
Streaming or reading time has dropped to a fraction of what it was. When the same use drains it much faster, the cell has lost capacity.
The tablet works plugged in and dies soon after you unplug it. That usually means the battery can't supply enough power by itself.
A raised back panel, a gap at the screen edge, or a tablet that rocks on a table means the battery is swelling. Stop charging it.
It reboots during video calls or games, when the battery has to deliver the most power. Weak cells drop voltage under load.

What usually causes it
Tablets often get charged every night for years. Each cycle wears the cell a little, and capacity drops.
Tablets used as kitchen screens, kiosks or bedside clocks sit at full charge all day. Constant full charge plus warmth ages the battery and can lead to swelling.
A tablet left on a car dashboard or in direct sun gets hot enough to damage the cell. Charging while hot makes it worse.
Putting a tablet away dead for a long time can drain the battery past the point where it will safely recharge.
How we fix it
- 1Battery diagnostic
We identify your exact model, check for swelling, and measure how the tablet draws current through the port. That tells us whether the battery, the charger or the charging circuit is at fault.
- 2Open the right way for your model
iPads open through the screen. Many Galaxy Tab, Fire and Kindle models open from the back cover instead. We use controlled heat and plastic tools to release the adhesive or clips without bending the panel.
- 3Remove the bonded battery
Tablet batteries are large and glued in. We soften the adhesive with isopropyl and lift the cell flat and slowly, since bending or puncturing a lithium battery can start a fire.
- 4Install and reseal
The new cell is connected and seated, the frame is cleaned and new adhesive is fitted so the cover or screen closes flush.
- 5Charge and runtime test
We check that it charges at a normal rate, holds charge off the cable and doesn't shut down under load. Touch, buttons, cameras and speakers are tested after reassembly.

We fit a new cell made for your model, with the correct connector and capacity, and new adhesive. If a swollen battery has bent the frame or cracked the screen, we tell you before we start so you can decide what to fix.

- Back up anything you care about to the cloud or a computer.
- Bring the charger and cable you normally use.
- Find the model number on the back or in the settings menu.
- Write down your passcode or PIN for testing after the repair.
- If it's swollen, don't charge it. Keep it on a hard surface away from anything flammable and bring it in.
Repair or replace?
A battery is often the only part that's actually worn out on an older tablet, so replacing it can give you years more for much less than a new one. That's especially true for iPads still getting updates and higher-end Galaxy Tabs. For low-cost tablets, the battery job can approach the price of a new one, and we'll tell you so. If the tablet no longer runs your apps, a new battery won't change that.
Thinking of fixing it yourself?
Tablet batteries are glued in with a lot of adhesive and sit right under the screen or a thin back cover. Prying with screwdrivers bends the cell, and a bent lithium battery can smoke or catch fire, sometimes minutes later. Screens crack easily when they're heated and pried. If you've already started and the battery is bent, hissing, smelling sweet or getting hot, put it outside on concrete away from anything flammable and call us. Don't keep working on it.
After your repair
- Run the tablet through a few normal charge cycles. The battery reading gets more accurate.
- If it lives on a charger all day, unplug it now and then, or use a battery charge limit if your tablet has one.
- Keep it out of hot cars and direct sun, especially while charging.
- If you store it, leave it around half charged, not empty.

Is a swollen tablet battery dangerous?
Yes. A swollen battery has gas building inside, and if it's punctured or kept charging it can catch fire. Stop using it, don't press the screen or back down, and bring it in as soon as you can.
How long does a tablet battery replacement take?
Most are done the same or next day. Swollen batteries and models that need parts ordered take longer, and we tell you at drop-off.
Do you replace Surface tablet batteries?
