Signs you need this repair
If the cover bulges or the back of the console is lifting, the battery has swollen. Stop charging it and bring it in.
The disc spins and stops, or the console never sees the UMD. A dirty or worn laser, or a worn drive mechanism, is the usual cause.
The power light stays off or flashes, even on the charger. A dead battery, a worn charge port or a power fault on the board are the common causes.
Cracks, dead pixels or a backlight that stays dark. On the PS Vita 1000 the OLED panel is bonded to the glass, so cracks usually mean a full screen replacement.
The PSP nub wears down, snaps off or drifts. On the Vita, the two sticks drift the same way console controllers do.
Worn contact pads and grime under the buttons cause missed presses on both PSP and Vita.
The game card slot or the memory card slot stops reading. Bent pins and worn contacts are common.
What usually causes it
PSP and Vita batteries are now old enough to swell or stop holding a charge, especially after sitting fully charged or fully flat.
Dust settles on the laser lens, and the drive's moving parts wear with use.
Screens crack under pressure, and the PSP analog nub gets knocked and worn.
Years of plugging in loosen the port and crack its solder joints, so it only charges at an angle or not at all.
Liquid corrodes contacts and the board, which shows up as dead buttons, power faults and slots that stop reading.

Most PSP and PS Vita repairs take 2 to 5 days. A battery or charge port usually lands at the short end. A part that has to be ordered, like a Vita OLED screen, or board work after liquid damage, takes longer. We call if the estimate changes.

Before you bring it in
- If the battery cover is bulging, stop charging it and bring it in.
- Take out your UMD, memory stick or Vita cards, or tell us if you want them tested with the console.
- Back up your Vita memory card if you can. PSP saves live on the Memory Stick.
- Bring your charger if you suspect it, so we can test both.
- Mailing it in? Wrap it in bubble wrap so nothing presses on the screen.
Repair or replace?
Repairing usually makes sense. PSPs and Vitas aren't made anymore, and a used one bought online has the same aging battery, drive and ports as yours. The exception is a Vita 1000 with a cracked OLED screen, where the scarce part can cost more than the console is worth. We tell you plainly after the free diagnostic.
Thinking of fixing it yourself?
A PSP battery swap is easy, and a new analog nub cap clips on. Screens, UMD lasers and Vita internals are tight work with thin ribbon cables that tear easily. If you've opened it and something got worse, stop and bring it in.
After your repair
- Don't store it fully charged or fully flat for months. Charge it to about half first.
- Keep UMDs in their cases and close the drive door so dust stays out.
- Use a hard case in a backpack so pressure can't crack the screen.

Which models do you repair?
Every PSP, including the 1000, 2000, 3000, Go and Street, and both PS Vita models, the 1000 (OLED) and the 2000 (Slim).
My PSP battery is swollen. Is it safe?
Stop charging it and don't press on it. Bring it in and we replace the battery. Left in, a swollen battery can crack the shell or push on the board.
Can you fix a PSP that won't read UMDs?
Usually. We clean the laser and the drive first, which fixes many of them. If that isn't enough, we replace the laser or the drive.
Can you replace a cracked PS Vita OLED screen?
Often, but the original OLED panels are scarce, so we check availability and give you the price before any work. The Vita 2000 uses a different screen that is easier to find.
